Wiley, William T. Wiley Exhibition, 1978 Landfall Press

A scurvy sailor stands with his head through a porthole along with a group of his nautically themed friends on this exhibition poster at the Baltimore Muesem of Art.

Based at the University of California, Davis, he shared his idiosyncratic wisdom, or “Wiz-dumb,” as he called it, a pun that resurfaces in his work. Sometimes strumming his guitar in class, he exhorted his students to remain open to everything, except for theory or ideology.

 Some staining at bottom.
