Originally published in 1924, this poster promoted travel to Chicago's tourist destinations via the Rapid Transit Rail Lines. Designed by Rocco Navigato, it shows a view of the intersection of Wabash and Wacker Drive looking south along the Chicago River. Navigato's studio was at the top of the Wrigley Building, which provided him this wonderful view of the Jeweler's Building at 35 East Wacker.

 


35 East Wacker, also known as the Jewelers' Building is a 40-story historic building built from 1925 to 1927, and was co-designed by Joachim G. Giaver and Frederick P. Dinkelberg.  Formerly the Pure Oil Building and North American Life Insurance Building, 35 East Wacker was listed in 1978 as a contributing property to the Michigan–Wacker Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places, and was designated a Chicago Landmark on February 9, 1994.

These original transit posters were printed in the mid 1920s and were 40 x 80" inches.  The scale of these posters was so large that it necessitated the creation of 2-part images to be printed on 2 sheets of paper and then be joined together when they were originally used as advertisements for the Elevated and other rail lines at different stations around Chicago and the surrounding.  Since each section of the image was originally drawn by hand by the artist, on separate plates, there are instances where portions of these images do not align perfectly.  This is the nature of these artworks and is not considered to be a flaw or defect.  That is exactly the way the posters were made and that is how we have revived the images in our collection of reproductions.
