This poster - created to promote travel on the Elevated lines by Elmes - depicts the two bronze lions that flank the Michigan Avenue entrance of the Art Institute's opening at its current location in 1893. They have unofficial "names," which were given by their sculptor Edward Kemeys that are more like designations. The lions are not identical, and thus are named for their poses: The south lion "stands in an attitude of defiance," while the north lion is "on the prowl."

These original transit posters were printed in the mid 1920s and were 40 x 80" inches. The scale of these posters was so large that it necessitated the creation of 2-part images to be printed on 2 sheets of paper and then be joined together when they were originally used as advertisements for the Elevated and other rail lines at different stations around Chicago and the surrounding areas. Since each section of the image was originally drawn by hand by the artist, on separate plates, there are instances where portions of these images do not align perfectly. This is the nature of these artworks and is not considered to be a flaw or defect. That is exactly the way the posters were made and that is how we have revived the images in our collection of reproductions.
