Penfield, Harper's Christmas, 1897

This beautiful original poster for Harper's 1897 Christmas issue depicts a gentleman reading while he reclines on a bench. Hanging on the wall are decorative plates, long stemmed pipes, a wreath, and a plaque which reads "Peace On Earth, Good Will Towards Men."

Artist Edward Penfield, Harper's art director, designed a poster each month between 1894 and 1899. He introduced the art poster to Americans after the French had popularized advertising posters as the "art of the people" in the streets of Paris.
