Penfield, The Martian DFP 412, c.1898

An original poster advertisement for the book "The Martian" by author George du Maurier. This poster features a dramatic scene of a man kneeling at an open window with open arms, as a bright star shines in the night sky.

Artist Edward Penfield, Harper's art director, designed a poster each month between 1894 and 1899. He introduced the art poster to Americans after the French had popularized advertising posters as the "art of the people" in the streets of Paris.
