WPA Let The Artist Speak, 1942 - original poster

"Pan Americana Series: Let The Artist Speak, Part 2 - South America and the Islands." This WPA sponsored radio program was presented by the Chicago Public Schools Art Department & Radio Council and aired on local station WIND every Wednesday at 1:30 p.m from February to June, 1942. This striking design features carved gourd art and a small silhouette of South America. Made by Illinois WPA Art Project, Chicago.

The Works Progress Administration, later renamed the Work Projects Administration, was created under President Roosevelt’s New Deal. This national program created jobs for millions of unemployed men and women to carry out public projects including building construction, arts, media and literacy projects, food and clothing distribution, and housing. Beautifully designed posters were used to create public awareness of the WPA-funded programs, activities, and performances.
