The first star in the Chicago flag represents the 1812 destruction of Fort Dearborn, the earliest American settlement at what is now Chicago. Settlers and Indians on both sides became victims of the conflict with England known as the War of 1812. The end of the war saw the sovereignty of the United States intact. The nation was free to begin the unparalleled growth which Chicago has mirrored.
